In coordination chemistry, a ligand is an ion or molecule (functional group) that binds to a central metal atom to form a coordination complex. The bonding between metal and ligand generally involves formal donation of one or more of the ligand's electron pairs. The nature of metal-ligand bonding can range from covalent to ionic. Furthermore, the metal-ligand bond order can range from one to three. Ligands are viewed as Lewis bases, although rare cases are known to involve Lewis acidic "ligand."

Ein Ligand (lat. ligare = „binden“) bezeichnet in der Komplexchemie (sowie in Organometallchemie und Bioanorganik) ein Atom oder Molekül, welches über eine koordinative Bindung (veraltet auch „dative Bindung“) an ein zentrales Metall-Ion binden („koordinieren“) kann. Die koordinative Bindung kommt durch den Lewis-Charakter der beteiligten Bindungspartner zustande: Liganden sind Lewis-Basen (Elektronenpaar-Donatoren), Metallionen Lewis-Säuren (Elektronenpaar-Akzeptoren).

Een ligand is een molecuul of een ion dat een vrij elektronenpaar heeft, dat gebruikt kan worden om een binding te vormen met een metaal of een metaalion. De metaal-ligandbinding kan worden beschreven als de interactie tussen een Lewisbase en een Lewiszuur.
