myth

A myth is a traditional or legendary story, collection, or study. It is derived from the Greek word mythos (μύθος), which simply means "story". Mythology can refer either to the study of myths, or to a body or collection of myths.

A myth is, broadly, any worldview-based traditional story, or collection or study thereof:

• Sacred narrative, which validates a religious system
• Origin myth, which purports to describe the origin of some feature of the natural or social world
  • Creation myth, symbolic narrative of how the world began and how people first came to inhabit it
  • Etiological myth, intended to explain the origins of cult practices, natural phenomena, proper names and the like
• Political myth, ideological explanation for a political phenomenon that is believed by a social group
• Mythology, a body of myths (e.g., Greek mythology) or the academic discipline that studies myths
• Fable
• Folklore, a broad body of cultural traditions
  • Folkloristics, the formal, academic discipline devoted to the study of folklore
• Legend, narrative that is perceived as within human history with certain qualities of verisimilitude
• Urban legend, contemporary legend or modern story with motivating significance

Ein Mythos (maskulin, von , „Laut, Wort, Rede, Erzählung, sagenhafte Geschichte, Mär“, lateinisch mythus; Plural: Mythen) ist in seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung eine Erzählung, mit der Menschen und Kulturen ihr Welt- und Selbstverständnis zum Ausdruck bringen. Im traditionellen religiösen Mythos wird durch den Mythos das Dasein der Menschen mit der Welt der Götter verknüpft.

Mythe (Grieks: mythos; μυθος) betekende oorspronkelijk in het Grieks gesproken woord, verhaal. De betekenis is afhankelijk van de context:

• In de tijd van Homerus kreeg het woord mythe de betekenis die als hoofdbetekenis moet worden gezien: heilig, overgeleverd verhaal van een volk over zijn herkomst en godsdienst.
• Vanaf het einde van de 19e eeuw wordt het begrip mythe gehanteerd binnen wetenschappen als de psychologie, culturele antropologie en de historische sociologie in een andere betekenis: een verhaal met een louterende werking dat een diepe waarheid over het menselijk bestaan uitdrukt, bijvoorbeeld door uitbeelding te geven aan een archetype.
• Het woord mythe wordt in het dagelijks spraakgebruik vaak ten onrechte verstaan als ​fictie, iets dat nooit gebeurd is, een verzonnen verhaal. Een mythe wordt echter vaak opgevat als een zinrijk, betekenisvol en zelfs rëeel verhaal, al bevat de vertelling vele elementen die niet rëeel zijn in letterlijke of historische zin. In dit verband zei Mircea Eliade, een godsdiensthistoricus, hierover ooit: "Myths tell only of that which really happened."

Un mythe est un récit qui se veut explicatif et surtout fondateur d'une pratique sociale. Il est porté à l'origine par une tradition orale, qui propose une explication pour certains aspects fondamentaux du monde et de la société qui a forgé ou qui véhicule ces mythes :

• la création du monde (cosmogonie) ;
• les phénomènes naturels ;
• le statut de l'être humain, et notamment ses rapports avec le divin, avec la nature, avec les autres individus (d'un autre sexe, d'un autre groupe), etc. ;
• la genèse d'une société humaine et ses relations avec les autres sociétés.
