La
philosophie naturelle, connue en
latin sous le terme
philosophia naturalis, est une expression qui s'appliquait à l'étude objective de la
nature et de l'univers physique qui régnait avant le développement de la
science moderne (
Galilée). Traditionnellement alliée à la
théologie naturelle, elle désignait autrefois l'ensemble des sciences astronomique, physique, chimique et biologique. La philosophie naturelle se distinguait de la
philosophie morale, qui désignait non seulement la morale et l'éthique, mais aussi la
théorie de la connaissance, la
psychologie, la
sociologie, la
politique et l'
esthétique.
