El concepto de
noesis (en
griego νόησις '
intuición, penetración') tiene su origen en el pensamiento
filosófico de
Platón. Éste creó una correspondencia entre los campos de estudio de la
metafísica y la
epistemología, basada en la división del mundo en lo
sensible y lo
inteligible; al mundo sensible corresponde el criterio de la
doxa (es decir, la 'opinión'), en tanto que material, aparencial, finito, mutable, y por tanto engañoso; a lo inteligible, el mundo de las Ideas, corresponde la
episteme (cuyo instrumento es la razón, basada en la Noesis), en tanto que facultad de penetración intelectiva.
