Punctuation is "the use of spacing, conventional signs, and certain typographical devices as aids to the understanding and the correct reading, both silently and aloud, of handwritten and printed texts." Another description is: "The practice, action, or system of inserting points or other small marks into texts, in order to aid interpretation; division of text into sentences, clauses, etc., by means of such marks."

Satzzeichen sind Sonderzeichen einer Schrift, die der Strukturierung und auch der Sinn­gebung des Satzbaus dienen. Die Setzung der Satzzeichen wird Zeichensetzung oder Interpunktion genannt.

Elle indique des faits de la langue orale, comme l'intonation ou les pauses de diverses longueurs (indications prosodiques). Znaki te pozwalają na odzwierciedlenie w tekście pisanym zależności składniowych między członami wypowiedzenia lub między wypowiedzeniami, na wyodrębnienie, podkreślenie – ze względów znaczeniowych lub emocjonalnych – pewnych wyrazów lub fragmentów tekstu, a także na ujednoznacznienie tekstu pisanego.
