The following is a
list of cities in Japan by population. The following table indicates all cities in Japan that have a population greater than 200,000 as of the 2010 Japan Census. Prefectural capitals are indicated in
bold. Japan has many major
cities. Many of these cities are crowded into a relatively small area of land along the
Pacific coast of
Honshu, between
Tokyo and
Fukuoka. This heavily urbanized strip is known as the
Taiheiyo Belt or the Tokaido corridor. The latter name refers to the
historic highway that connected the cities of Tokyo and
Kyoto, which has now been replaced by
expressways and the high-speed
Shinkansen railway line ("Bullet Train").
