Abortion

Abortion is the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. An abortion which occurs spontaneously is also known as a miscarriage. An abortion may be caused purposely and is then called an induced abortion, or less frequently, "induced miscarriage". The word abortion is often used to mean only induced abortions. A similar procedure after the fetus could potentially survive outside the womb is known as a "late termination of pregnancy".

Ein Schwangerschaftsabbruch (umgangssprachlich auch Abtreibung; medizinisch abruptio graviditatis oder induzierter Abort) ist die absichtliche vorzeitige Beendigung einer unerwünschten oder die Gesundheit der Frau gefährdenden Schwangerschaft. Der Embryo überlebt den Eingriff normalerweise nicht. Davon zu unterscheiden ist der übergeordnete medizinische Begriff Abort; dieser umfasst auch einen natürlichen Spontanabort (Fehlgeburt).

Abortus (arte) provocatus, ook wel abortus provocatus lege artis of opzettelijke vruchtafdrijving genoemd, is de medische term voor het voortijdig afbreken van een zwangerschap door (medisch) ingrijpen. In het Nederlands wordt meestal kortweg de term abortus gebruikt voor deze handeling. Incidenteel komt men de term abactio tegen met betrekking tot een opgewekte abortus of partus.

L’avortement se définit comme l'interruption avant son terme du processus de gestation, c'est-à-dire du développement qui commence à la conception par la fécondation d'un ovule par un spermatozoïde formant ainsi un œuf, qui se poursuit par la croissance de l'embryon, puis du fœtus, et qui s'achève normalement à terme par la naissance d'un nouvel individu de l'espèce.
