America

America is a short form name for the United States of America.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km²) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.

América (Originaltitel The Tortilla Curtain; „Tortilla Curtain“ bezeichnet umgangssprachlich die „durchlässige“ Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den USA) ist ein Roman des US-amerikanischen Autors T. C. Boyle aus dem Jahr 1995. Hauptthemen sind amerikanische Werte, die teils begründeten, teils paranoiden Ängste und die Ausländerfeindlichkeit einer gehobenen Mittelschicht gegenüber illegalen Einwanderern sowie Armut und Umweltzerstörung.

Der Name Amerika steht im Allgemeinen für:

América (en inglés: the Americas, en francés: Amérique) es el segundo continente más grande de la Tierra, después de Eurasia. Ocupa gran parte del hemisferio occidental del planeta. Se extiende desde el océano Glacial Ártico por el norte hasta las islas Diego Ramírez por el sur, en la confluencia de los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico, los cuales a su vez delimitan al continente por el este y el oeste, respectivamente.

America est le nom en latin médiéval du continent américain. Il est à l'origine du nom français Amérique qui peut être employé au singulier ou au pluriel selon si l'on considère l'Amérique comme un seul continent ou les différentes Amériques séparément (l'Amérique du Nord, du Sud et centrale). Le nom latin est encore employé tel-quel dans plusieurs langues dont notamment en anglais dont les locuteurs emploient également ce nom pour désigner les États-Unis d'Amérique. Cependant, cette utilisation est erronée, car étant donné que le nom America désigne un continent, il ne doit être associé seulement aux États-Unis, le Canada et le Mexique faisant également partie de l'Amérique.
