Antarctic

The Antarctic (US English , UK English or and or ) is a polar region, specifically the region around the Earth's South Pole, opposite the Arctic region around the North Pole. The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica and the ice shelves, waters, and island territories in the Southern Ocean situated south of the Antarctic Convergence. The region covers some 20% of the Southern Hemisphere, of which 5.5% (14 million km²) is the surface area of the continent itself.

Die Antarktis (altgriechisch  antarktikos „der Arktis gegenüber“) umfasst die um den Südpol gelegenen Land- und Meeresgebiete, also im Groben den Kontinent Antarktika und den Südlichen Ozean (Südpolarmeer, Antarktik). Als geographisch-astronomische Zone wird sie durch den südlichen Polarkreis begrenzt und reicht somit vom Südpol bis 66° 33' südlicher Breite. Als ozeanografische Grenze gilt die antarktische Konvergenz bei etwa 50° südlicher Breite, wo das kalte antarktische unter das wärmere subtropische Oberflächenwasser absinkt. Die Zone zwischen 50° Süd und dem Polarkreis wird auch als subantarktisch bezeichnet. Seit der Definition des Südlichen Ozeans mit dem 60. Breitengrad (2000) beginnt sich diese Grenze auch auf den Antarktisbegriff auszuwirken. Die Subantarktis bildet dann jeweils die Südzone der umgebenden Meeresgebiete Südatlantik, Südpazifik und Südlicher Indischer Ozean.

Antarctica is het continent rond de zuidpool van de Aarde. Antarctica is genoemd naar de Arctis, het noordpoolgebied, met het voorvoegsel anti- (tegenover-). In oppervlakte is het het vijfde continent, na Azië, Afrika, Noord-Amerika en Zuid-Amerika en voor Europa en Australië.

L'Antarctique (prononcé , ou aussi ), parfois appelé continent austral ou continent blanc, est le continent le plus méridional de la Terre. Situé autour du pôle Sud, il est entouré de l'océan Austral (ou océan Antarctique) et bordé par les mers de Ross et de Weddell.
