Atlantis

Atlantis (, "island of Atlas") is a fictional island mentioned within an allegory on the hubris of nations in Plato's works Timaeus and Critias, where it represents the antagonist naval power that besieges "Ancient Athens", the pseudo-historic embodiment of Plato's ideal state (see The Republic). In the story, Athens was able to repel the Atlantean attack, unlike any other nation of the (western) known world, supposedly giving testament to the superiority of Plato's concept of a state. At the end of the story, Atlantis eventually falls out of favor with the gods and famously submerges into the Atlantic Ocean.

Stargate Atlantis (often abbreviated SGA) is a Canadian-American adventure and military science fiction television series and part of MGM's Stargate franchise. The show was created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper as a spin-off series of Stargate SG-1, which was created by Wright and Jonathan Glassner and was itself based on the feature film Stargate (1994). All five seasons of Stargate Atlantis were broadcast by the Sci-Fi Channel in the United States and The Movie Network in Canada. The show premiered on July 16, 2004; its final episode aired on January 9, 2009. The series was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Atlantis ( ‚Insel des Atlas‘) ist ein mythisches Inselreich, das der antike griechische Philosoph Platon (428/427 bis 348/347 v. Chr.) in der Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. als Erster erwähnte und beschrieb. Es war laut Platon eine Seemacht, die ausgehend von ihrer „jenseits der Säulen des Herakles“ gelegenen Hauptinsel große Teile Europas und Afrikas unterworfen hat. Nach einem gescheiterten Angriff auf Athen sei Atlantis schließlich um 9600 v. Chr. infolge einer Naturkatastrophe innerhalb „eines einzigen Tages und einer unglückseligen Nacht“ untergegangen.

Stargate Atlantis ist ein Ableger der Fernsehserie Stargate SG-1, die auf dem Kinofilm Stargate aus dem Jahr 1994 basiert. Die Serie ist nach ihrem Hauptschauplatz, der verlassenen Antiker-Hauptstadt Atlantis benannt. Produziert wurde die Serie von Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

En la literatura griega clásica era usada frecuentemente para denominar a una «hija o descendiente de Atlas» (su traducción más literal), y en especial a la «mar Atlántica» en femenino. Heródoto (1.202), por ejemplo, la cita como: θάλασσα ἥ Ἀτλαντίς καλεομένη (thálassa hḗ Atlantís kaleoménē, «la mar llamada Atlántica»). Otro uso idiomático es el de Ἀτλαντίς νῆσος (Atlantís nḗsos, «isla Atlántica»), tradicionalmente interpretada como «isla Atlántida» (Platón, Timeo 25a; Estrabón 2.3.6.).

Stargate Atlantis is een sciencefictionserie voor televisie gebaseerd op Stargate SG-1 en de film Stargate. De serie liep van 2004 tot 2009, met een totaal van 100 afleveringen.

L'Atlantide (du grec ancien  / , sous-entendu / , « île ou presqu'île », c'est-à-dire « île d'Atlas ») est une île qui aurait été engloutie lors de la Protohistoire grecque et d'Europe de l'Est. Elle est évoquée par Platon dans deux dialogues, Timée puis le Critias. Le récit de Platon a peu d'influence durant l'Antiquité mais il suscite un intérêt croissant à partir du Moyen Âge. Le mythe donne naissance à un grand nombre d'interprétations dont certaines cherchent à faire de l'Atlantide un lieu qui aurait réellement existé. Dans le même temps, l'Atlantide inspire de nombreuses interprétations ésotériques. Au début du , les chercheurs eux-mêmes restent partagés entre les tenants d'une Atlantide de pure fiction (les hellénistes et une partie des historiens de l'Antiquité) et les partisans d'une lecture du récit de Platon ancrée à des événements réels (certains historiens de l'Antiquité et certains archéologues). Enfin, l'Atlantide demeure un thème très fertile dans l'art et la littérature en particulier dans les genres liés au merveilleux et au fantastique, comme la fantasy, le péplum ou la science-fiction.

Stargate Atlantis (France) ou La Porte d'Atlantis (Québec) est une série télévisée américano-canadienne de science-fiction en 100 épisodes de 42 minutes, créée par Brad Wright et Robert C. Cooper, dérivée de la série Stargate SG-1 et diffusée entre le et le sur Sci Fi. La série devait se terminer par un film (Stargate : Extinction), finalement annulé.
