Birefringence

Birefringence is the optical property of a material having a refractive index that depends on the polarization and propagation direction of light. These optically anisotropic materials are said to be birefringent (or birefractive). The birefringence is often quantified as the maximum difference between refractive indices exhibited by the material. Crystals with asymmetric crystal structures are often birefringent, as are plastics under mechanical stress.

Die Doppelbrechung, oder Birefringenz, ist die Fähigkeit von optisch anisotropen Medien  ein Lichtbündel in zwei senkrecht zueinander polarisierte Teilbündel zu trennen. Die Ursache dieses Effekts liegt im unterschiedlichen Brechungsindex (n_o und n_ao) in Abhängigkeit von der Ausbreitungsrichtung und Polarisation des Lichtes. Ein prominentes Beispiel für ein solches Material ist Calcit (Kalkspat, auch Doppelspat), an dem die Doppelbrechung 1669 von Erasmus Bartholin entdeckt wurde.

La biréfringence est la propriété physique d'un matériau dans lequel la lumière se propage de façon anisotrope. Dans un milieu biréfringent, l'indice de réfraction n'est pas unique, il dépend de la direction de polarisation de l'onde lumineuse.
