Devonian

The Devonian is a geologic period and system of the Paleozoic Era spanning from the end of the Silurian Period, about  Mya (million years ago), to the beginning of the Carboniferous Period, about . It is named after Devon, England, where rocks from this period were first studied. The Devonian period experienced the first significant adaptive radiation of terrestrial life. Free-sporing vascular plants began to spread across dry land, forming extensive forests which covered the continents. By the middle of the Devonian, several groups of plants had evolved leaves and true roots, and by the end of the period the first seed-bearing plants appeared. Various terrestrial arthropods also became well-established. Fish reached substantial diversity during this time, leading the Devonian to often be dubbed the "Age of Fish". The first ray-finned and lobe-finned bony fish appeared, while the placoderms began dominating almost every known aquatic environment.

Die Devonian (I) war ein 1900 in Dienst gestellter Transatlantikdampfer der britischen Reederei Leyland Line, der im Passagier- und Frachtverkehr zwischen Großbritannien und der USA eingesetzt wurde. Am 21. August 1917 wurde das Schiff von einem deutschen U-Boot versenkt.

Das Devon ist in der Erdgeschichte das vierte chronostratigraphische System bzw. die vierte geochronologische Periode innerhalb des Paläozoikums. Es begann vor etwa Millionen Jahren und endete vor etwa Millionen Jahren (siehe Geologische Zeitskala). Das Devon folgt auf das Silur und wird vom Karbon überlagert.

Het Devoon is een periode in de geologische tijdschaal (en een systeem in de stratigrafie) die duurde van 419,2 ± 3,2 tot 358,9 ± 0,4 miljoen jaar (Ma) geleden. Het Devoon is onderdeel van het era Paleozoïcum. Het volgt op het Siluur en wordt opgevolgd door het Carboon.

Le Dévonien est un système géologique s’étendant de à . Il est suivi par le Carbonifère et précédé par le Silurien. Le Dévonien est nommé d’après le Devonshire en Angleterre où les affleurements de couches datant de cette époque sont communs.
