Edgar (
the)
Ætheling (also spelt
Æþeling,
Aetheling,
Atheling or
Etheling) or
Edgar II (c. 1051 – c. 1126) was the last male member of the royal house of
Cerdic of Wessex (see
House of Wessex family tree). He was proclaimed, but never crowned,
King of England in 1066. He was made
Earl of Oxford by
Harold II in January 1066 and Edgar was allowed to regain the title by
William I after his abdication in December 1066. Edgar forfeited the title permanently in 1068 after his rebellion against William.
