Hongwu Emperor (; 21 October 1328 – 24 June 1398), personal name
Zhu Yuanzhang and
courtesy name Guorui , was the founder and first emperor of the
Ming dynasty of China. His
temple name was
Ming Taizu , which literally means "Grand Ancestor of Ming".
Hongwu, the
era name of his reign, means "vastly martial".
