Immunoglobulin A (IgA, also referred to as sIgA) is an antibody that plays a critical role in mucosal immunity. More IgA is produced in mucosal linings than all other types of antibody combined; between three and five grams are secreted into the intestinal lumen each day. This accumulates up to 15% of the total immunoglobulin produced in the entire body.

Immunglobulin A (IgA) ist ein Antikörper, der hauptsächlich in den externen Körperflüssigkeiten (zum Beispiel Urogenitalschleim, Milch, oder Eingeweideflüssigkeiten) vorkommt und dort eine bedeutende Abwehrbarriere gegen Krankheitserreger bildet. Im Serum bildet es etwa 15 ller Immunglobuline. Es wird von unter dem Epithel liegenden Plasmazellen synthetisiert. IgA kann als Monomer (also nur ein Molekül) oder als Dimer (zwei Moleküle, verbunden an den langen Enden des Antikörper-Ypsilon) vorkommen. Bei den Dimeren handelt es sich um das sogenannte sekretorische IgA (sIgA).
