Infrared

Infrared (IR) is invisible radiant energy, electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light, extending from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum at 700 nanometers (frequency 430 THz) to 1 mm (300 GHz) (although people can see infrared up to at least 1050 nm in experiments). Most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature is infrared.

Als Infrarotstrahlung (kurz IR-Strahlung, auch Ultrarotstrahlung) bezeichnet man in der Physik elektromagnetische Wellen im Spektralbereich zwischen sichtbarem Licht und der längerwelligen Terahertzstrahlung. Als Infrarot wird der Spektralbereich zwischen 10^-3 m und 7,8×10^-7 m (1 mm und 780 nm) bezeichnet, was einem Frequenzbereich von 3×10¹¹ Hz bis ca. 4×10¹⁴ Hz (300 GHz bis 400 THz) entspricht.

Infrarood of infrarode straling, is voor het oog niet waarneembare elektromagnetische straling, met golflengten tussen circa 780 nanometer en 1 mm (10⁶ nm), dus tussen het (zichtbare) rode licht en de microgolven.
