Das MineralMontmorillonit ist ein häufig vorkommendes Schichtsilikat mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung ~(Al1,67Mg0,33)[(OH)2Si4O10] • Na0,33(H2O)4. Es kristallisiert im monoklinen Kristallsystem und entwickelt nur mikroskopisch kleine, nadelige Kristalle, die gewöhnlich kompakte, massige Aggregate bilden. Auch Inklusionen (Einschlüsse) von Montmorillonit in Quarz sind bekannt.
