Mycobacterium lepromatosis is a
bacterium that, along with
Mycobacterium leprae, causes
leprosy (Hansen's disease). It was only recently discovered, in 2008. Analysis of its
16S rRNA gene confirms that the species is distinct from
Mycobacterium leprae.
