Placebo

A placebo ( ; Latin , "I shall please" from , "I please") is a simulated or otherwise medically ineffectual treatment for a disease or other medical condition intended to deceive the recipient. Sometimes patients given a placebo treatment will have a perceived or actual improvement in a medical condition, a phenomenon commonly called the placebo effect or placebo response. The placebo effect consists of several different effects woven together, and the methods of placebo administration may be as important as the administration itself.

Ein Placebo (lat. „ich werde gefallen“) ist im engeren Sinn ein Scheinarzneimittel, welches keinen Arzneistoff enthält und somit auch keine durch einen solchen Stoff verursachte pharmakologische Wirkung haben kann.

«Placebo» puede referirse a:

• Sustancia placebo, sustancia farmacológicamente inerte que se utiliza como control en un ensayo clínico.
• Efecto placebo, capacidad curativa de un agente terapéutico que no produce ningún efecto farmacológico.

Een placebo (Latijn en het betekent: 'ik zal behagen') is een als geneesmiddel voorgeschreven of aangeprezen middel dat geen werkzame bestanddelen bevat. Het woord placebo wordt ook gebruikt als kort voor het placebo-effect. Een placebo slaat in die betekenis op een positief psychisch effect dat optreedt door vertrouwen in de heilzame werking van een behandeling (bijvoorbeeld meer gevoel van welbehagen of opluchting). De placebo zelf geneest echter niets. Ook bij geneesmiddelen treedt placebo op door de verwachting die de patiënt heeft. Echte geneesmiddelen dienen daarom het placebo-effect significant te overstijgen om over "medicinale werkzaamheid" te kunnen spreken.

Placebo est un mot latin, il correspond à la forme conjuguée du verbe placere, « plaire », à la première personne du singulier du futur de l'indicatif, c'est-à-dire « je plairai ».

Un médicament placebo contient des substances supposées neutres, c’est-à-dire sans effet pharmacologique démontré dans la pathologie considérée, administré dans le but de plaire au patient (du latin placebo, je plairai).
