Das Wort Republik (von ‚öffentliche Sache‘) steht zunächst für das Gemeinwesen und Gemeinwohl. Als Staatsform versteht man darunter (seit der römischen Antike und insbesondere der Französischen Revolution) in erster Linie das Gegenmodell zur Monarchie.
