Roland

Roland (Frankish: Hruodland) (died 15 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. The historical Roland was military governor of the Breton March, responsible for defending Francia's frontier against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni, which notes he was part of the Frankish rearguard killed by rebellious Basques in Iberia at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Philae ( or ) is a robotic European Space Agency lander that accompanied the Rosetta spacecraft until it landed on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, more than ten years after departing Earth. On 12 November 2014, the probe achieved the first-ever soft landing on a comet nucleus. Its instruments obtained the first images from a comet's surface. Philae is monitored and operated from DLR's Lander Control Center in Cologne, Germany. Several of the instruments on Philae made the first direct analysis of a comet, sending back data that will be analysed to determine the composition of the surface.

Roland (* ca. 736; † 15 augustus 778), ook bekend als Roeland, Roelant of Orlando (in het Oudfrankisch Hruodland of Hruotland), was een van de eerste Paladijnse ridders aan het hof van keizer Karel de Grote in de 8e eeuw. In de latere Middeleeuwen werd hij een populaire held die in liederen en proza werd bezongen. Het bekendste van deze liederen is het 12e-eeuwse Chanson de Roland (Roelantslied).

Roland ou Hruotland (Hruodland en francique), dit « Roland le preux », né en 736 et mort en 778 à Roncevaux, est un chevalier franc, comte des Marches de Bretagne, chargé de défendre la frontière du royaume des Francs contre les Bretons, et – selon la légende – neveu de Charlemagne. Il a notamment donné son nom à la brèche de Roland et à La Chanson de Roland.
