Skull

The skull is a bony structure in the head of most vertebrates (in particular, craniates) that supports the structures of the face and forms a protective cavity for the brain. The skull is composed of two parts: the cranium and the mandible. The skull forms the anterior most portion of the skeleton and is a product of encephalization, housing the brain, many sensory structures (eyes, ears, nasal cavity), and the feeding system.

Das Skull ist ein Vortriebsmittel für Ruderboote. Jeder Ruderer bedient zwei Skulls, jeweils eines auf der Backbord- und der Steuerbordseite des Ruderbootes. Die mit Skulls ausgeübte Rudertechnik wird als „Skullen“ bezeichnet und Skullruderer werden „Skuller“ genannt.

Als Schädel werden die Knochen des Kopfes der Wirbeltiere bezeichnet. Das entsprechende Fremdwort, das aber den Unterkiefer nicht mit einbezieht, lautet Cranium oder Kranium (mittellateinisch cranium, Pl. crania, von griechisch κρανίον krānion). Der dem Schädel nachfolgende Bereich des Skeletts wird entsprechend als Postkranialskelett (oder Postkranium) bezeichnet; intrakraniell bedeutet „im Schädel gelegen“. Hartmann Schedel (Neurenberg, 13 februari 1440 – aldaar, 28 november 1514) was een Duits arts, historicus en humanist. Hij maakte als een van de eerste cartografen gebruik van de drukpers. Matheolus Perusinus wordt beschouwd als zijn leermeester.

De schedel is een geheel van verschillende botstructuren, die samen het deel van het skelet vormen dat vorm geeft aan het hoofd van een mens of aan de kop van een dier. De voornaamste functie van de schedel is bescherming van de hersenen.

Le crâne est une structure osseuse ou cartilagineuse de la tête, caractéristique des crâniates (dont font partie les vertébrés). Le rôle principal du crâne est de protéger le système nerveux central qu'il entoure, il sert aussi de points d'attache à des muscles du visage et du cou.
