Theophrastus

Theophrastus (; Theόphrastos; c. 371 – c. 287 BC), a Greek native of Eresos in Lesbos, was the successor to Aristotle in the Peripatetic school. He came to Athens at a young age and initially studied in Plato's school. After Plato's death, he attached himself to Aristotle. Aristotle bequeathed to Theophrastus his writings and designated him as his successor at the Lyceum. Theophrastus presided over the Peripatetic school for thirty-six years, during which time the school flourished greatly. He is often considered the "father of botany" for his works on plants. After his death, the Athenians honoured him with a public funeral. His successor as head of the school was Strato of Lampsacus.

Theophrastos (griech. ; * um 371 v. Chr. zu Eresos auf der Insel Lesbos; † 287 v. Chr.? in Athen) war ein griechischer Philosoph und Naturforscher. Theophrastos war Schüler des Aristoteles und Leiter der peripatetischen Schule. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „Theophr.“.

Theophrastus van Eresus (Grieks: Θεόφραστος, Theophrastos) (ongeveer 371 – 287 v.Chr.) op Lesbos was een leerling van Aristoteles, die na diens dood (in 322 v.Chr.) scholarch (hoofd) werd van de Peripatetische School. Hij was evenals zijn leermeester een universeel geleerde die zich met vele takken van wetenschap bezighield. Hij wordt als één der eerste botanici beschouwd. Plinius de Oudere (1e eeuw n.Chr.) vermeldt hem enkele keren in zijn Historia naturalis.

Théophraste (en grec ancien  / Théophrastos) est un philosophe de la Grèce antique né vers 371 av. J.-C. à Eresós (Lesbos) et mort vers 288 av. J.-C. à Athènes. Élève d’Aristote, il fut le premier scholarque du Lycée, de 322 av. J.-C. à sa mort, botaniste et naturaliste, polygraphe ou encore alchimiste.

Fu discepolo di Aristotele a cui succedette come scolarca nella direzione del Liceo (il Peripato) nel 322 a.C..
