Voivodeship

A voivodeship is the area administered by a voivode (Governor) in several countries of central and eastern Europe. Voivodeships have existed since medieval times in Poland, Wallachia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Russia and Serbia. The administrative level of area (territory) of voivodeship resembles that of a duchy in western medieval states, much as the title of voivode was equivalent to that of a duke. Other roughly equivalent titles and areas in medieval Eastern Europe included ban (bojan, vojin or bayan) and banate.

Eine Woiwodschaft oder Wojewodschaft ist ein polnischer Verwaltungsbezirk als oberste Stufe der territorialen Gliederung (ISO 3166-2-Ebene, siehe ISO 3166-2:PL) und liegt in der Statistikebene NUTS-2. Nächstkleinere Selbstverwaltungseinheit ist der Powiat (Landkreis). Aktuell gibt es in Polen 16 Woiwodschaften.

Een woiwodschap of provincie duidt oorspronkelijk het gebied aan dat door een woiwode wordt bestuurd, en is tegenwoordig de benaming van de zestien regionale bestuursgebieden van Polen, de województwa (enkelvoud: województwo), waarvan nog steeds een woiwode de hoogste bestuurder is.

Województwo – jednostka podziału administracyjnego wyższego stopnia w Polsce, od 1990 r. jednostka zasadniczego podziału terytorialnego dla administracji rządowej, od 1999 r. także jednostka samorządu terytorialnego.

Ett vojvodskap (województwo på polska, vojvodstvo eller vojvodina på serbiska, voievodat på rumänska) är traditionellt i slaviska länder en provins som lyder under en guvernör med titeln  vojvod. Exempelvis kallas de administrativa provinserna i Polen för vojvodskap, vilket ungefärligen motsvarar Sveriges indelning i län.
