AccountAbility is an independent, global, not-for-profit organisation promoting accountability, sustainable business practices and corporate responsibility. It is a self-managed partnership, governed by its multi-stakeholder network.

In ethics and governance, accountability is answerability, blameworthiness, liability, and the expectation of account-giving. As an aspect of governance, it has been central to discussions related to problems in the public sector, nonprofit and private (corporate) and individual contexts. In leadership roles, accountability is the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions, and policies including the administration, governance, and implementation within the scope of the role or employment position and encompassing the obligation to report, explain and be answerable for resulting consequences.

Der Begriff der Verantwortung bezeichnet nach verbreiteter Auffassung die Zuschreibung einer Pflicht zu einer handelnden Person oder Personengruppe (Subjekt) gegenüber einer anderen Person oder Personengruppe (Objekt) aufgrund eines normativen Anspruchs, der durch eine Instanz eingefordert werden kann und vor dieser zu rechtfertigen (zu beantworten) ist. Handlungen und ihre Folgen können je nach gesellschaftlicher Praxis und Wertesystem für den Verantwortlichen zu Konsequenzen wie Lob und Tadel, Belohnung, Bestrafung oder Forderungen nach Ersatzleistungen führen. Die Beziehung (Relation) zwischen den beteiligten Akteuren knüpft am Ergebnis des Handelns an.

La responsabilité est le devoir de répondre de ses actes, toutes circonstances et conséquences comprises, c’est-à-dire d'en assumer l'énonciation, l'effectuation, et par suite la réparation voire la sanction lorsque l'attendu n'est pas obtenu.
