In the common law tradition, an acquittal formally certifies that the accused is free from the charge of an offence, as far as the criminal law is concerned. This is so even where the prosecution is abandoned nolle prosequi. The finality of an acquittal is dependent on the jurisdiction. In some countries, such as the United States, under the rules of double jeopardy and autrefois acquit, an acquittal operates to bar the retrial of the accused for the same offense, even if new evidence surfaces that further implicates the accused. The effect of an acquittal on criminal proceedings is the same whether it results from a jury verdict, or whether it results from the operation of some other rule that discharges the accused. In other countries, the prosecuting authority may appeal an acquittal similar to how a defendant may appeal a conviction.

Acquit is de aanvangspositie van een partij in het carambolebiljart. Daarbij ligt de rode bal op het bovenacquit, de (gemarkeerde of gele) bal van de tegenstander op het benedenacquit en de speelbal op het linker of rechter onderacquit. Voor een geldige carambole is het verplicht dat de speelbal eerst de rode bal raakt. Tegenwoordig is internationaal vastgelegd dat de acquitstoot moet worden gespeeld met de volledig witte bal als speelbal.

Vrijspraak is een uitspraak in een strafproces, die inhoudt dat de rechter niet wettig en overtuigend bewezen acht dat de verdachte het ten laste gelegde feit heeft begaan. Om tot vrijspraak te komen behoeft dus niet te worden bewezen dat de verdachte iets niet gedaan heeft. In ons rechtssysteem wordt de verdachte voor onschuldig gehouden indien zijn schuld niet wettig en overtuigend bewezen kan worden. Een vrijspraak is dus geen bewijs dat de verdachte onschuldig is.
