In biology, an adaptation, also called an adaptive trait, is a trait with a current functional role in the life of an organism that is maintained and evolved by means of natural selection. Adaptation refers to both the current state of being adapted and to the dynamic evolutionary process that leads to the adaptation. Adaptations enhance the fitness and survival of individuals. Organisms face a succession of environmental challenges as they grow and develop and are equipped with an adaptive plasticity as the phenotype of traits develop in response to the imposed conditions. The developmental norm of reaction for any given trait is essential to the correction of adaptation as it affords a kind of biological insurance or resilience to varying environments.

Eine evolutionäre Anpassung, in der wissenschaftlichen Terminologie als Adaptation bezeichnet, ist ein in einer Population eines bestimmten Lebewesens auftretendes Merkmal, das für sein Überleben bzw. seinen Fortpflanzungserfolg vorteilhaft ist, und das durch natürliche Mutation und anschließende Selektion für seinen gegenwärtigen Zustand entstanden ist. Ein Merkmal kann in diesem Zusammenhang sowohl eine morphologische Besonderheit als auch eine Verhaltensweise sein. Damit ein Merkmal adaptiv ist, also als Anpassung in den Genpool einer Population einfließen kann und sich darin verbreiten kann, muss es erblich sein, d. h. eine genetische Basis besitzen. Die sexuelle Fortpflanzung besitzt im Vergleich zur asexuellen Fortpflanzung eine höhere Rate der Anpassung.

Adaptacja (łac. adaptatio – przystosowanie) – przystosowanie się organizmu poprzez zmianę struktury lub funkcji do życia w nowych dla niego, trwale zmienionych warunkach bytowych lub zewnętrznego stresu. Efektywność adaptacji określa dostosowanie.
