Addition (often signified by the plus symbol "+") is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic, with the others being subtraction, multiplication and division. The addition of two whole numbers is the total amount of those quantities combined. For example, in the picture on the right, there is a combination of three apples and two apples together; making a total of 5 apples. This observation is equivalent to the mathematical expression "3 + 2 = 5" i.e., "3 add 2 is equal to 5".

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, similar to hyperkinetic disorder in the ICD-10) is a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder in which there are significant problems with executive functions (e.g., attentional control and inhibitory control) that cause attention deficits, hyperactivity, or impulsiveness which is not appropriate for a person's age. These symptoms must begin by age six to twelve and persist for more than six months for a diagnosis to be made. In school-aged individuals inattention symptoms often result in poor school performance. Although it causes impairment, particularly in modern society, many children have a good attention span for tasks they find interesting.

Aandachtstekortstoornis of attention deficit disorder (ADD) is een aandoening waarbij een sterk verlaagd vermogen om aandacht voldoende bij activiteiten te houden aanwezig is. Volgens het algemeen gebruikte handboek voor de indeling van psychische aandoeningen, het DSM-IV, is ADD een subtype van ADHD (ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type (ADHD-PI)), en wel het zogenoemde overwegend onoplettende type, gekenmerkt door een aandachtstekortstoornis en concentratieproblemen. ADD wordt meer dan ADHD in verband gebracht met depressie, angststoornissen en slechte prestaties. Gedragsproblemen staan minder op de voorgrond. Onderzoek toont aan dat ADHD of ADD voorkomt bij 1 tot 4% van alle kinderen en dat zeker een derde deel er ook als volwassene nog last van ondervindt. ADD en ADHD komen voor bij mensen van alle opleidingsniveaus.
