Addition (often signified by the plus symbol "+") is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic, with the others being subtraction, multiplication and division. The addition of two whole numbers is the total amount of those quantities combined. For example, in the picture on the right, there is a combination of three apples and two apples together; making a total of 5 apples. This observation is equivalent to the mathematical expression "3 + 2 = 5" i.e., "3 add 2 is equal to 5".

Die Addition (, von addere „hinzufügen“), umgangssprachlich auch Plus-Rechnen oder Und-Rechnen genannt, ist eine der vier Grundrechenarten in der Arithmetik. Die Addition basiert auf dem Vorgang des Zählens. Deshalb verwendet man für den Vorgang, eine Addition auszuführen, neben Addieren auch den Ausdruck Zusammenzählen. Das Rechenzeichen für die Addition ist das Pluszeichen „+“. Es wurde 1489 von Johannes Widmann eingeführt.

Optellen is een van de basisoperaties uit de rekenkunde. Optellen is oorspronkelijk het bepalen van het totale aantal dat ontstaat bij samenvoeging van twee of meer afzonderlijke aantallen. Het symbool voor optellen is het plusteken (+). In het plaatje hiernaast ziet men bijvoorbeeld 1 + 2 + 2 appels. Samengevoegd zijn dat vijf appels. Daarom is 1 + 2 + 2 = 5. Hierbij noemt men de getallen 1, 2 en 2 de termen. Het totaal, in ons voorbeeld 5, noemt men de som. Optellen is een rekenkundige bewerking van de eerste orde.

L'addition est une opération élémentaire, permettant notamment de décrire la réunion de quantités ou l'adjonction de grandeurs extensives de même nature, comme les longueurs, les aires, ou les volumes. En particulier en physique, l'addition de deux grandeurs ne peut s'effectuer numériquement que si ces grandeurs sont exprimées avec la même unité de mesure. Le résultat d'une addition est appelé une somme, et les nombres que l'on additionne, les termes.
