Adhesion is the tendency of dissimilar particles or surfaces to cling to one another (cohesion refers to the tendency of similar or identical particles/surfaces to cling to one another). The forces that cause adhesion and cohesion can be divided into several types. The intermolecular forces responsible for the function of various kinds of stickers and sticky tape fall into the categories of chemical adhesion, dispersive adhesion, and diffusive adhesion. In addition to the cumulative magnitudes of these intermolecular forces, there are certain emergent mechanical effects that will also be discussed at the end of the article.

Adhäsion (lat. adhaerere „anhaften“), auch Adhäsions- oder Anhangskraft genannt, ist der physikalische Zustand einer Grenzflächenschicht, die sich zwischen zwei in Kontakt tretenden kondensierten Phasen ausbildet – das heißt zwischen Feststoffen und Flüssigkeiten mit vernachlässigbarem Dampfdruck. Die Haupteigenschaft dieses Zustandes ist der durch molekulare Wechselwirkungen in der Grenzflächenschicht hervorgerufene mechanische Zusammenhalt der beteiligten Phasen. Die diesen mechanischen Zusammenhalt bewirkenden Kräfte sind nicht alle vollständig erforscht, weshalb es verschiedene Adhäsionstheorien gibt.

Une fois le contact établi, l’énergie nécessaire pour réaliser la séparation s’appelle énergie d’adhésion. Elle ne doit pas être confondue avec l’adhérence, qui est au contraire la force nécessaire pour réaliser cette même séparation. L’adhésion est soit directe, soit médiée par un matériau intermédiaire.
