affix

An affix (in modern sense) is a morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word. Affixes may be derivational, like English -ness and pre-, or inflectional, like English plural -s and past tense -ed. They are bound morphemes by definition; prefixes and suffixes may be separable affixes. Affixation is, thus, the linguistic process speakers use to form different words by adding morphemes (affixes) at the beginning (prefixation), the middle (infixation) or the end (suffixation) of words.

Een affix is in de taalkunde een (meestal gebonden) morfeem dat van zichzelf geen betekenis heeft, maar dat aan een ander morfeem (meestal een woord) vastgehecht wordt om zodoende een nieuw woord met een afgeleide betekenis te vormen. Globaal wordt er onderscheid gemaakt tussen afleidings- en buigingsaffixen.

En morphologie, domaine de la linguistique, un affixe (du latin ad-fixus > affixus, « (qui est) fixé contre ») est un morphème en théorie lié qui s'adjoint au radical ou au lexème d'un mot. Des affixes peuvent se lexicaliser et donc devenir des morphèmes libres : c'est par exemple le cas pour le préfixe ex- dans une expression comme mon ex, à savoir mon ex-mari / -petit ami, etc.
