Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes and almost never changes the number of chromosomes. Asexual reproduction is the primary form of reproduction for single-celled organisms such as the archaebacteria, eubacteria, and protists. Many plants and fungi reproduce asexually as well.

Unter ungeschlechtlicher oder asexueller Vermehrung versteht man die Reproduktion von Lebewesen unter Erhöhung der Individuenzahl, bei der die Nachkommen ausschließlich die Gene eines Elternteils enthalten und zwar – abgesehen von Mutationen – in identischer Kopie. Synonyme sind: Agamogonie (altgriechisch γάμος, gamos Heirat, Ehe und γονή, gonē, Erzeugung, Geburt) und Monogonie (altgriechisch μόνος allein, einzig und γονή, gonē, Erzeugung, Geburt). Die Ausdrücke ungeschlechtliche oder asexuelle Fortpflanzung lassen offen, ob bei der Fortpflanzung die Anzahl der Individuen wächst. Von ungeschlechtlicher Fortpflanzung bei Blütenpflanzen spricht man, wenn keine Geschöechtzellen an der Fortpflanzung beteiligt sind.

La multiplication asexuée est un mode de reproduction, qui — par opposition à la reproduction — correspond à la capacité des organismes vivants de se multiplier seuls, sans partenaire, sans faire intervenir la fusion de deux gamètes de sexes opposés. On observe la multiplication asexuée chez les pluricellulaires (animaux et végétaux) et chez les organismes unicellulaires. En botanique, le terme souvent employé pour la multiplication asexuée des végétaux est multiplication végétative.

Organizm potomny powstaje z części organizmu rodzicielskiego. U bakterii może dojść do prostego przewężenia i powstania dwóch komórek potomnych z jednej rodzicielskiej, organizm rozgwiazdy może zostać odtworzony tylko z jednego ramienia oderwanego od organizmu rodzicielskiego, rośliny mogą wytwarzać bulwy, cebule, rozłogi, porosty urwistki itd.
