Agriculture is the cultivation of animals, plants, fungi, and other life forms for food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal and other products used to sustain and enhance human life. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured the development of civilization. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. The history of agriculture dates back thousands of years, and its development has been driven and defined by greatly different climates, cultures, and technologies. In the civilized world, industrial agriculture based on large-scale monoculture farming has become the dominant agricultural methodology.

Als Landwirtschaft wird der Wirtschaftsbereich der Urproduktion bezeichnet. Das Ziel der Urproduktion ist die zielgerichtete Herstellung pflanzlicher oder tierischer Erzeugnisse auf einer zu diesem Zweck bewirtschafteten Fläche. In der Wissenschaft sowie der fachlichen Praxis ist synonym der Begriff Agrarwirtschaft gebräuchlich.

Landbouw (ook: agricultuur, soms: land- en tuinbouw, dus inclusief horticultuur) is het geheel van economische activiteiten waarbij het natuurlijke milieu wordt aangepast ten behoeve van de productie van planten en dieren voor menselijk gebruik. Afhankelijk van het product, de productiemethode, de grondsoort en het niveau van welvaart wordt gebruikgemaakt van een groot aantal uiteenlopende technieken, variërend van het werken met eenvoudige werktuigen of met trekdieren tot het gebruik van grote machines, waarbij arbeid steeds meer gemechaniseerd is en vervangen wordt door machines.

L’agriculture (du latin agricultura, composé à partir de ager, champ et colere, cultiver) est un processus par lequel les êtres humains aménagent leurs écosystèmes pour satisfaire les besoins alimentaires en premier et autres, de leurs sociétés. Elle désigne l’ensemble des savoir-faire et activités ayant pour objet la culture des sols, et, plus généralement, l’ensemble des travaux sur le milieu naturel (pas seulement terrestre) permettant de cultiver et prélever des êtres vivants (végétaux, animaux, voire champignons ou microbes) utiles à l’être humain.
