Algae ( or ; singular alga ) is an informal term for a large, diverse group of eukaryotes that are not necessarily closely related and are thus polyphyletic. Included organisms range from unicellular genera, such as Chlorella and the diatoms, to multicellular forms, such as the giant kelp, a large brown alga that may grow up to 50 meters in length. Most are aquatic and autotrophic and lack many of the distinct cell and tissue types, such as stomata, xylem and phloem, that are found in land plants. The largest and most complex marine algae are called seaweeds, while the most complex freshwater forms are the Charophyta, a division of green algae that includes, for example, Spirogyra and the stoneworts.

Die Bezeichnung Alge (lat. alga = „Seegras“, „Tang“) wird auf verschiedene eukaryotische Lebewesen angewendet, die im Wasser leben und Photosynthese betreiben. Dazu gehören auch zahlreiche photosynthetische Protisten. Algen stellen keine monophyletische Verwandtschaftsgruppe im Sinne der biologischen Systematik dar. Gleichwohl wird die Bezeichnung „Algen“ auch in der Biologie für einen Sammelbegriff verwendet.

Algen of wieren is de verzamelnaam voor een aantal weinig verwante groepen van doorgaans relatief eenvoudige organismen die lichtenergie via fotosynthese gebruiken om koolhydraten te verkrijgen. Algen vormen geen taxon in de zin van de biologische systematiek. Anders gezegd: nagenoeg alle organismen met fotosynthese die niet behoren tot de 'hogere planten' of 'landplanten' (Embryophyta), zijn algen. Algen worden bestudeerd binnen de fycologie of algologie.

Les algues sont des êtres vivants capables de photosynthèse dont le cycle de vie se déroule généralement en milieu aquatique. Elles constituent une part très importante de la biodiversité et la base principale des chaînes alimentaires des eaux douces, saumâtres et marines. Diverses espèces sont utilisées pour l'alimentation humaine, l'agriculture ou l'industrie.
