ambivalence

Ambivalence is a state of having simultaneous conflicting reactions, beliefs, or feelings towards some object. Stated another way, ambivalence is the experience of having an attitude towards someone or something that contains both positively and negatively valenced components. The term also refers to situations where "mixed feelings" of a more general sort are experienced, or where a person experiences uncertainty or indecisiveness.

Unter Ambivalenz (lat.  „beide“ und „gelten“) wird in der Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Psychiatrie und Psychoanalyse das Nebeneinander von gegensätzlichen Gefühlen, Gedanken und Aussagen verstanden. In der gehobenen Umgangssprache gebräuchlicher ist das Adjektiv ambivalent (zwiespältig, doppelwertig, mehrdeutig, vielfältig). Der Begriff wurde von Eugen Bleuler (1857–1939) geprägt.

Ambivalentie is een staat van in conflict zijnde emoties die gerelateerd zijn aan hetzelfde object, idee of persoon (bijvoorbeeld, gevoelens van liefde en haat voor iets of iemand). De term wordt ook vaak gebruik om situaties aan te duiden waar men gemengde gevoelens over heeft, of iets waar een persoon onzeker of besluiteloos over is.

Le terme a été introduit en 1910 par Eugen Bleuler pour caractériser un aspect de l'état psychique des schizophrènes. Il a été repris par Sigmund Freud dans une acception différente: il s'agit de la juxtaposition plus ou moins simultanée de deux affects: l'amour et la haine. C'est à partir de là que ce terme a recouvert un concept psychanalytique qui, curieusement par rapport à Bleuler s'applique à des organisations névrotiques et qu'on distingue de la paradoxalité (Racamier), de la divalence et de l'ambiguité (Bleger).

Ambiwalencja (intencjonalność dwuwartościowa) (łac. ambo - obaj + valens, valentis - mocny, skuteczny) – postawa charakteryzująca się jednoczesnym występowaniem pozytywnego jak i negatywnego nastawienia do obiektu (np. ciekawość i strach dziecka wobec pojawiającej się w otoczeniu nowej osoby; jednoczesne uczucie miłości do rodzica oraz nienawiści za np. fizyczne znęcanie się), głoszeniem całkowicie sprzecznych stwierdzeń (ambisentencja) lub wykonywaniem sprzecznych ze sobą czynności (ambitendencja) bez świadomości ich sprzecznego charakteru. Stanowi jeden z głównych objawów dezintegracji psychicznej w schizofrenii. Termin wprowadził do psychiatrii Eugen Bleuler w 1911 roku.
