appellation

An appellation is a legally defined and protected geographical indication used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown; other types of food often have appellations as well. Restrictions other than geographical boundaries, such as what grapes may be grown, maximum grape yields, alcohol level, and other quality factors, may also apply before an appellation name may legally appear on a wine bottle label. The rules that govern appellations are dependent on the country in which the wine was produced.

Appellation (von lateinisch appellare „(be)nennen, rufen“) steht für:

Au sens premier, le mot appellation désigne l'action consistant à appeler quelqu'un ou quelque chose. En particulier ce mot peut désigner :

• en droit, l'appel d'un jugement ;
• action de donner un nom, et notamment de désigner un produit agricole, artisanal ou industriel récolté ou fabriqué dans un lieu ou pays déterminé : l'appellation d'origine dont certaines peuvent faire l'objet de protections d'emploi grâce à des labels officiels comme l'appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) ou l'appellation d'origine protégée (AOP).

Appellation är en kvalitetsgaranti på franska viner, som säkerställer växtplats, druvsort, odlingsmetoder, framställningsmetoder och alkoholhalt. Även för vissa andra jordbruksprodukter förekommer appellationer i Frankrike.
