Aristocrats is a broad term that usually refers to people that a particular social order considered the highest social class of that society. Specifically, in many states, the aristocracy implied the upper class of people (aristocrats) who typically possess a hereditary rank and specifically titles. In some societies—such as Ancient Greece, Rome, and India—aristocratic status may derive from membership of a military caste, although it has also been very common for aristocrats to belong to priestly dynasties in lieu of this, as is the case in polities all over the continent of Africa. Aristocratic status can involve feudal or legal privileges. They are usually below only the monarch of a country or nation in its social hierarchy. In modern era European societies, the term aristocracy has often been used synonymously with the nobility, a specific class that arose in the middle ages, but the term aristocracy is sometimes also applied to other elites, and is used as a more generic term in reference to earlier and non-European societies.

Aristokratie bezeichnet in der Politikwissenschaft die Herrschaft einer kleinen Gruppe besonders befähigter Individuen, wobei die Art der Befähigung nicht näher bestimmt ist. Die ursprüngliche Wortbedeutung ist „Herrschaft der Besten“ (gr. ἀριστοκρατία, von ἄριστος: Bester und κρατεῖν: herrschen, im gleichen Sinne lat., wie etwa bei Cicero, civitas optimatum, Optimatenherrschaft). In der Praxis wurde die Eigenschaft, zu „den Besten“ zu gehören, in aller Regel mit der Zugehörigkeit zu einer adligen Oberschicht gleichgesetzt, weshalb man unter Aristokratie meist die Herrschaft des Adels versteht. In den Geschichtswissenschaften wird der Begriff Aristokratie auch synonym zu Adel als der Gesamtheit aller Adligen in einem bestimmten geografischen Bereich verwendet.

Aristocratie (Grieks: < ("beste") + ("heersen")) is een regeringsvorm waarbij de heerschappij in handen is van de aanzienlijksten in de samenleving, de zogenaamde "aristocraten". Doorgaans geldt binnen een aristocratie dat het lidmaatschap erfelijk is. De Griekse oorsprong van het woord suggereert de betekenis: geregeerd door de besten.

Une aristocratie (en grec : άριστοι : les meilleurs, et κράτος : pouvoir, autorité, gouvernement) est un régime politique dans lequel le pouvoir est officiellement détenu par une élite : caste ou classe, représentants élus ou cooptés, élite intellectuelle ou technocratique, voire philosophique... On désigne également par aristocratie les membres de cette élite, que ce soit les nobles, les notables ou les riches, une nomenklatura, des élus, ou tout autre forme d'élite visible ou cachée.
