augur

The augur was a priest and official in the classical world, especially ancient Rome and Etruria. His main role was the practice of augury, interpreting the will of the gods by studying the flight of birds: whether they are flying in groups or alone, what noises they make as they fly, direction of flight and what kind of birds they are. This was known as "taking the auspices." The ceremony and function of the augur was central to any major undertaking in Roman society—public or private—including matters of war, commerce, and religion.

Ein Augur war ein römischer Beamter, der zu ergründen hatte, ob ein vom Staat oder von einem pater familias (Familienoberhaupt) geplantes Unternehmen den Göttern genehm sei. Er verkündete den Götterwillen, den er beim augurium aus dem Flug und dem Geschrei der Vögel und anderer Tiere las (Auspizien, von lateinisch auspicium „Vogelschau“).

Un augur era un sacerdote de la Antigua Roma que practicaba oficialmente la adivinación.

Augur heeft meerdere betekenissen:

• Augur (cognomen), cognomen in het Romeinse Rijk;
• Augur (ambt), Romeins priester.

Een augur (meervoud auguren, augurs of augures) of vogelwichelaar was een priester in het oude Rome. Zijn taak was het waarnemen van de auspicia ("auspiciën"): het bepalen van de wil der goden aan de hand van de vlucht van de vogels. Het Nederlandse woord voor auspiciën is vogelschouw (avis vogel, spicere zien).

Augur (łac.) – rzymski kapłan, który odczytywał wolę bogów z nieba nad miastem na podstawie zjawisk atmosferycznych i lotu ptaków. W okresie późnej republiki, gdy loty ptaków nad gęsto zaludnionym Rzymem były już rzadkie, do odczytania woli bogów używano specjalnie hodowane kury. Augurzy uczestniczyli także w wyprawach wojennych, na których również sprawowali auspicja. Żadne ważne wydarzenie społeczne, polityczne czy militarne w starożytnym Rzymie epoki przedchrześcijańskiej nie mogło odbyć się bez "inauguracji" (wprowadzenia przez augura).
