Die
austronesischen Sprachen bilden eine sehr weit verbreitete
Sprachfamilie mit insgesamt etwa 1150 Sprachen, die von rund 300 Millionen Menschen gesprochen werden. Nach der Anzahl der Sprachen wird das Austronesische nur noch vom afrikanischen
Niger-Kongo übertroffen, nach der Zahl seiner Sprecher ist es die fünftgrößte
Sprachfamilie der Erde. Unter den Sprachfamilien wird das Austronesische in seiner flächenmäßigen Ausdehnung von
Madagaskar bis zur
Osterinsel, von
Taiwan bis nach
Neuseeland nur von den Indoeuropäischen Sprachen übertroffen.
