An auxiliary verb is a verb that adds functional or grammatical meaning to the clause in which it appears—for example, to express tense, aspect, modality, voice, emphasis, etc. Auxiliary verbs usually accompany a main verb. The main verb provides the main semantic content of the clause. An example is the verb have in the sentence I have finished my dinner. Here, the main verb is finish, and the auxiliary have helps to express the perfect aspect. Some sentences contain a chain of two or more auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs, helper verbs, or (verbal) auxiliaries. They may be glossed with the abbreviation AUX.

Als Hilfsverb (auch Auxiliarverb, Auxiliare, Auxiliar, Hilfszeitwort, Hilfswort) bezeichnet man in der Sprachwissenschaft bestimmte Verben, deren Funktion darin liegt, in Kombination mit einem Vollverb bestimmte grammatische Merkmale auszudrücken, z. B. Tempus oder Modus, während die Semantik des Prädikats allein vom Vollverb ausgeht. Im Deutschen verbinden sich Hilfs- und Vollverb zu einem mehrteiligen Prädikat.

Een hulpwerkwoord is een werkwoord dat, in tegenstelling tot zelfstandige werkwoorden, een betekenis toevoegt aan een ander werkwoord en daardoor in principe niet zelfstandig voorkomt. Een uitzondering hierop vormen de modale hulpwerkwoorden. Zinnen als "ik wil het" en "je moet" zijn correct Nederlands. In deze gevallen is het echter zo dat er impliciet wel een werkwoord bij hoort, in de genoemde zinnen bijvoorbeeld "hebben" of "doen".

En grammaire, un auxiliaire est un verbe  qui se combine à un verbe principal pour constituer ainsi un temps composé ou périphrastique. Il ajoute divers traits grammaticaux au verbe principal, dont les plus fréquents sont la personne, le temps, l'aspect, la voix, le mode, mais aussi d'autres catégories grammaticales comme la polarité négative, dans les langues ouraliennes. En français, il en existe deux de base : et suivis du verbe au participe passé. Ils sont utilisés pour conjuguer certains temps du passé et la voix passive. D'autres verbes, considérés également comme des auxiliaires aspectuels ou modaux, toujours suivis d'un second verbe à l'infinitif, sont traditionnellement appelés semi-auxiliaires . Les traits grammaticaux encodés dans l'auxiliaire d'une langue donnée peuvent très bien être exprimés par un morphème du verbe principal ou un affixe grammatical dans une autre langue ou même à une époque antérieure de la langue : l'allemand exprime le futur par un auxiliaire (er wird singen), le français par un morphème intégré à la terminaison (il chantera ), lui-même issu d'une construction auxiliée du latin tardif (* cantare (h)abet), l'arabe par le préfixe / sa-/ (يغني /yuʁannī / , il chante ; سيغني / sa-yuʁannī / , il chantera) . On considère généralement que pour être être rangé dans la catégorie des auxiliaires, un verbe doit pouvoir être conjugué et s'associer à un autre verbe (le verbe lexical ou auxilié) qui prend nécessairement une forme impersonnelle (infinitif, participe, radical) :

Czasownik posiłkowy – część mowy, która ma właściwości składniowe i morfologiczne czasowników danego języka, jednak w przeciwieństwie do nich nie ma żadnego znaczenia własnego, a spełnia jedynie funkcje gramatyczne (w szczególności służy do tworzenia form złożonych).
