axle

An axle is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear. On wheeled vehicles, the axle may be fixed to the wheels, rotating with them, or fixed to the vehicle, with the wheels rotating around the axle. In the former case, bearings or bushings are provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. In the latter case, a bearing or bushing sits inside a central hole in the wheel to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle. Sometimes, especially on bicycles, the latter type axle is referred to as a spindle.

Eine Achse ist ein Maschinenelement, das zur Lagerung drehbarer Bauteile wie Räder oder  Rollen dient. Sie ruht i.d.R. im Maschinengestell.

Een as of spil is in het algemeen iets waaromheen iets anders draait. In de praktijk is een as bijvoorbeeld een cilindervormig voorwerp, meestal van metaal, dat bedoeld is te roteren in een lager.

L'essieu est un élément mécanique d'un véhicule à roues constitué d'une pièce tranversale perpendiculaire au plan des roues situées face à face et les liant entre elles par leurs moyeux. Dans sa version la plus simple, on peut l'assimiler à l'axe reliant deux roues de part et d'autre du véhicule.

Oś – element mechanizmu lub maszyny, służący utrzymaniu w określonym położeniu osadzonych na tej osi wirujących elementów, najczęściej kół, oraz do przenoszenia na podpory sił działających na te elementy. Oś nie przenosi momentu obrotowego, przeciwnie niż wał.
