Biting is a common behaviour of opening and closing the jaw found in many animals. This behaviour is found in humans in addition to reptiles, mammals fish and amphibians. Arthropods can also bite. Biting is a physical action an attack but it is a normal activity or response in an animal as it eats, carries objects, softens and prepares food for its young, removes ectoparasites from its body surface, removes plant seeds attached to its fur or hair, scratching itself, and grooming other animals and for defense. Animal bites often result in serious infections and mortality. Dog bites are commonplace, with children the most commonly bitten and the face the most common target.

Der Biss bezeichnet den Vorgang des Beißens eines Lebewesens meist unter Verwendung seiner Zähne. Das Beißen ist eine zentrale Aufgabe des Kiefers. Auch das Verwenden von anderen Mundwerkzeugen, etwa von Mandibeln, wird oft als Biss bezeichnet. Außerdem werden durch das Beißen zugefügte Wundstellen oder Wundmale mit diesem Wort beschrieben.

Een bijtwond is een schaaf-, steek- of scheurwond van de huid veroorzaakt door de beet van dieren (of mensen). Het woord 'bijtwond' wordt vooral gebruikt als de weefselbeschadiging en het infectierisico de belangrijkste aspecten van de wond zijn; bij giftige wonden is het zinvoller de wond naar het veroorzakende dier te noemen (zie slangenbeet, spinnenbeet, insectenbeet)

Les animaux peuvent mordre en cas de légitime défense, dans la tentative de chasser de la nourriture, et également en tant qu'interactions normales. D'autres attaques par morsure peuvent apparemment être infligées involontairement. Les morsures auto-infligées proviennent de maladies génétiques telles que le syndrome de Lesch-Nyhan. La morsure est un acte qui survient lorsqu'un animal utilise ses dents dans le but de transpercer un objet, incluant nourriture, peau et autres matières. En raison des multiples risques (traumatique et infectieux viral et bactérien) toute personne mordue doit immédiatement se rendre au service d'accueil des urgences de l'hôpital le plus proche.

Pokousání zvíretem nebo clovekem je vždy vysoce závažné zranení pro infekci rány. Nejzávažnejším onemocnením, které se dá prenést kousnutím je pravdepodobne vzteklina. Domácí zvíre se proto musí vyšetrit u veterináre kvuli zjištení, zda je zvíre nakažené.
