Asphalt ( or , occasionally ), also known as bitumen (, ) is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It may be found in natural deposits or may be a refined product; it is a substance classed as a pitch. Until the 20th century, the term asphaltum was also used. The word is derived from the Ancient Greek ἄσφαλτος ásphaltos (itself perhaps an Eastern word, though see "Etymology" below).

Bitumen (lat. bitumen „Erdpech“) bezeichnet ein sowohl natürlich vorkommendes als auch durch Vakuumdestillation aus Erdöl gewonnenes Gemisch aus verschiedenen organischen Stoffen. Das Materialverhalten ist von der Umgebungstemperatur abhängig und wird als elasto-viskos bezeichnet. Bitumen ist klebrig, abdichtend, nicht flüchtig, und in unpolaren Lösemitteln wie z. B. Toluol weitestgehend bis vollständig löslich. Es kommt im Porenraum einiger Sedimentgesteine (z. B. in Schwarztonsteinen wie dem Kupferschiefer) und in Form von Naturasphalt vor.

Bitumen is een viskeuze vloeistof die van nature voorkomt in ruwe aardolie. Na fractionele destillatie kan het gescheiden worden van andere bestanddelen van de aardolie zoals nafta, benzine of diesel en blijft het als zwaarste bestanddeel achter. Het kan ook in de natuur zelf gevormd worden, zonder tussenkomst van de mens.

Le bitume est un matériau présent naturellement dans l'environnement ou pouvant être fabriqué industriellement après distillation de certains pétroles bruts. Il est composé d'un mélange d'hydrocarbures, peut se trouver à l'état liquide ou solide, et a une couleur brunâtre à noirâtre. Le bitume est liquéfiable à chaud et adhère aux supports sur lesquels on l'applique. Il possède un certain nombre de qualités physico-chimiques dont l'Homme a su faire usage depuis la Préhistoire. Dans le langage courant, on le confond souvent avec la poix, le goudron d'origine houillère, ou l'asphalte dont il n'est qu'un composant.
