blood type

A blood type (also called a blood group) is a classification of blood based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). These antigens may be proteins, carbohydrates, glycoproteins, or glycolipids, depending on the blood group system. Some of these antigens are also present on the surface of other types of cells of various tissues. Several of these red blood cell surface antigens can stem from one allele (or an alternative version of a gene) and collectively form a blood group system. Blood types are inherited and represent contributions from both parents. A total of 35 human blood group systems are now recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). The two most important ones are ABO and the RhD antigen; they determine someone's blood type (A, B, AB and O, with +, - or Null denoting RhD status).

Eine Blutgruppe ist eine Beschreibung der individuellen Zusammensetzung der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen (Erythrozyten) von höheren Lebewesen (z.B. Mensch). Die Oberflächen unterscheiden sich durch verschiedene Glykolipide oder Proteine, die als Antigene wirken und somit zu einer Immunreaktion führen können. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt den Blutgruppen in der Transfusionsmedizin zu. Wird nämlich einem Patienten Blut einer ungeeigneten Blutgruppe transfundiert, so kommt es zu einer Immunreaktion, die wiederum zur Verklumpung (Agglutination) des Blutes und damit zum Tod führen kann. Blutgruppen sind erblich und können verwendet werden um Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse auszuschließen (siehe auch Artikel Abstammungsgutachten).

Een bloedgroep is een classificatie van bloed bepaald door het al dan niet aanwezig zijn van bepaalde moleculen ('antigenen') op de buitenkant van het celmembraan van de rode bloedcellen. Deze antigenen zijn macromoleculen, dat wil zeggen, hoogmoleculaire verbindingen. Bloedgroepantigenen kunnen zowel eiwitten, koolhydraten, glycoproteïnen of glycolipiden zijn. Sommige van deze antigenen worden gecodeerd uit één allel (of sterk verbonden genen). Deze worden samen een bloedgroepensysteem genoemd.

Un groupe sanguin est une classification reposant sur la présence ou l'absence de substances antigéniques héritées à la surface des globules rouges (hématies). Ces antigènes peuvent être des protéines, des glucides, des glycoprotéines ou des glycolipides, selon le système de groupe sanguin, et certains de ces antigènes sont également présents à la surface d'autres types de cellules de différents tissus.

Niezgodność w obrębie układu grupowego wiąże się z reakcją odpornościową organizmu, polegającą na wytworzeniu przeciwciał skierowanych przeciwko nieprawidłowym antygenom, obecnym na erytrocytach. W ramach tego samego gatunku może istnieć wiele układów grupowych krwinek czerwonych. Zachowanie zasad zgodności w obrębie układów grupowych krwi jest istotne podczas transfuzji krwi, przeszczepianiu narządów oraz w ciąży.
