A boil, also called a furuncle, is a deep folliculitis, infection of the hair follicle. It is most commonly caused by infection by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, resulting in a painful swollen area on the skin caused by an accumulation of pus and dead tissue. Boils which are expanded are basically pus-filled nodules. Individual boils clustered together are called carbuncles. Most human infections are caused by coagulase-positive S. aureus strains, notable for the bacteria's ability to produce coagulase, an enzyme that can clot blood. Almost any organ system can be infected by S. aureus.

Een steenpuist, steenzweer (Brabants) of furunkel (medische term) is een ontstoken haarzakje in de huid en is een acute, necrotiserende vorm van een folliculitis. De ontsteking ontstaat door een infectie met stafylokokken en is besmettelijk bij openbreken. De bacterie komt bij veel mensen echter op de huid voor zonder dat ze er last van hebben, vooral in de neus en in het kruis. Steenpuisten ontstaan vooral in de nek, het gezicht en op borst en billen. Wrijving van de huid langs kleding en vochtigheid zijn bevorderende factoren. Steenpuisten danken hun naam aan het feit dat de ontstoken plek erg hard kan worden.

Le furoncle est une infection bactérienne profonde d'un follicule pileux provoquant la nécrose périfolliculaire et la suppuration. Il en résulte une induration douloureuse du derme causée par une accumulation de pus et de tissus morts. Au terme de sa maturation, entre 5 et 10 jours, le furoncle s'ouvre et élimine le follicule pileux (bourbillon) formant une ulcération cratériforme. La guérison totale survient en quelques jours laissant une cicatrice atrophique.
