botanist

Botany, also called plant science(s) or plant biology, is the science of plant life and a branch of biology. A botanist or plant scientist is a scientist who specializes in this field of study. The term "botany" comes from the Ancient Greek word (botane) meaning "pasture", "grass", or "fodder"; is in turn derived from (boskein), "to feed" or "to graze". Traditionally, botany has also included the study of fungi and algae by mycologists and phycologists respectively, with the study of these three groups of organisms remaining within the sphere of interest of the International Botanical Congress. Nowadays, botanists study approximately 400,000 species of living organisms of which some 260,000 species are vascular plants and about 248,000 are flowering plants.

Die Botanik ( botaniké [epistemé]) erforscht als Pflanzenkunde (von botáne‚ Weide-, Futterpflanze‘) ein Teilgebiet der Biologie, die Pflanzen. Sie befasst sich mit dem Lebenszyklus, Stoffwechsel, Wachstum und Aufbau der Pflanzen; ferner mit ihren Inhaltsstoffen (siehe Heilkunde), ihrer Ökologie und ihrem wirtschaftlichen Nutzen (siehe Landwirtschaft).

Een botanicus is een wetenschapper die de plantkunde beoefent, een plantkundige. De vrouwelijke vorm is botanica, het meervoud is botanici. Een van de beroemdste botanici is Carolus Linnaeus die de basis legde voor de binominale nomenclatuur.

De plantkunde of botanie is een tak van de natuurwetenschap. Zij wordt ook wel fytologie, of botanica genoemd. Het woord 'botanica' is een bijvoeglijk naamwoord bij het Latijnse 'ars' (kunst of kunde), maar wordt tegenwoordig ook gebruikt in de betekenis van "vrouwelijke botanicus" oftewel "vrouwelijke plantkundige". 'Botanica' kan ook opgevat worden als een meervoud; het betekent dan meestal 'botanische specimina' maar kan ook meer algemeen 'botanische aangelegenheden/zaken/dingen' aanduiden.

La botanique est la science consacrée à l'étude des végétaux (du grec βοτανιϰή; féminin du mot βοτανιϰός qui signifie « qui concerne les herbes, les plantes »). Elle présente plusieurs facettes qui la rattachent aux autres sciences du vivant. La botanique générale recouvre la taxinomie (description des caractères diagnostiques et différentiels), la systématique (dénombrement et classification des taxons dans un certain ordre), la morphologie végétale (décrivant les organes ou parties des végétaux), l'histologie végétale, la physiologie végétale, la biogéographie végétale et la pathologie végétale. Certaines disciplines, comme la dendrologie, sont spécialisées sur un sous-ensemble des végétaux.
