The Phaeophyceae or brown algae (singular: alga), is a large group of mostly marine multicellular algae, including many seaweeds of colder Northern Hemisphere waters. They play an important role in marine environments, both as food and for the habitats they form. For instance Macrocystis, a kelp of the order Laminariales, may reach 60 m in length, and forms prominent underwater forests. Another example is Sargassum, which creates unique habitats in the tropical waters of the Sargasso Sea. Many brown algae, such as members of the order Fucales, commonly grow along rocky seashores. Some members of the class, such as kelp, are used as food for humans.

Die Braunalgen (Phaeophyceae, Syn.: Phaeophyta) bilden eine eigene Gruppe innerhalb der Stramenopilen (Stramenopiles), einer Untergruppe der Sar. Es handelt sich um meist marine, oft braune Algen mit Generationswechsel.

De bruinwieren (Phaeophyta) zijn algen. Het zijn meercellige Chromalveolata die zeer groot kunnen worden. Zo wordt Macrocystis langs de Californische kust tot 60 meter lang. De groene kleur van het chlorophyl is verdrongen door het bruine pigment fucoxanthine. Hierdoor varieert hun kleur van bleekbruin tot donkerbruin of zijn ze soms zelfs zwartig. Sommige vertegenwoordigers vertonen kenmerkende drijfblazen.

Les algues brunes, aussi nommées Phaeophyceae ou Phéophycées (du grec : brun, sombre) sont une classe d'algues de l'embranchement des Ochrophyta. Ce sont des algues qui utilisent comme pigment collecteur de lumière de la chlorophylle c plus un pigment brun, la fucoxanthine.
