brown coal

Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft brown combustible sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. It is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. It has a carbon content around 25-35%. It is mined all around the world and is used almost exclusively as a fuel for steam-electric power generation, but is also mined for its germanium content in China. As of 2014, about 12% of Germany's energy and, specifically, 27% of Germany's electricity comes from lignite power plants, while in Greece, lignite provides about 50% of its power needs.

Braunkohle (früher auch Turff genannt) ist ein bräunlich-schwarzes, meist lockeres Sedimentgestein, das durch Druck und Luftabschluss (Inkohlung = natürlicher Vorgang oder hydrothermale Karbonisierung = industrietechnisches Verfahren) von organischen Substanzen entstand. Braunkohle ist ein fossiler Brennstoff, der zur Energieerzeugung verwendet wird. Rohbraunkohle besitzt etwa ein Drittel des Heizwertes von Steinkohle, was etwa 8 MJ oder 2,2 kWh pro Kilogramm entspricht. Aufbereitete (getrocknete) Braunkohle hat ungefähr zwei Drittel des Werts von Steinkohle.

Le lignite est une roche sédimentaire composée de restes fossiles de plantes (vient de Lignine). C'est une roche intermédiaire entre la tourbe et la houille.

Węgiel brunatny – skała osadowa pochodzenia organicznego roślinnego powstała w neogenie, w erze kenozoicznej ze szczątków roślin obumarłych bez dostępu powietrza. Zawartość węgla 62-75%. Często stosowany jako paliwo. Jego wartość opałowa waha się od 7,5 do 21 MJ/kg. Węgiel brunatny jest nieodnawialnym źródłem energii.  Polska Norma przewiduje, że:

• zawartość wilgoci całkowitej nie powinna być wyższa niż 55%,
• zawartość piasku w węglu brunatnym w stanie roboczym nie powinna być wyższa niż 6%,
• zawartość lignitu włóknistego (tzw. ksylitu – odmiany węgla brunatnego o zachowanej strukturze drewna) nie powinna być wyższa niż 5%
