Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership of the means of production and the creation of goods and services for profit. Central characteristics of capitalism include private property, capital accumulation, wage labour and competitive markets. In a capitalist market economy, investments are determined by private decision and the parties to a transaction typically determine the prices at which they exchange assets, goods, and services.

Kapitalismus bezeichnet zum einen eine spezifische Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung, zum anderen eine Epoche der Wirtschaftsgeschichte. Die zentralen Merkmale sind in Anbetracht des historischen Wandels und der zahlreichen Kapitalismusdefinitionen sowie ideologischer Unterschiede umstritten. Allgemein wird unter Kapitalismus eine Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung verstanden, die auf Privateigentum an den Produktionsmitteln und einer Steuerung von Produktion und Konsum über den Markt beruht. Als weitere konstitutive Merkmale werden genannt: die Akkumulation, für manche das „Herzstück“ und Hauptmerkmal des Kapitalismus, und das „Streben nach Gewinn im kontinuierlichen, rationalen kapitalistischen Betrieb“.

Het kapitalisme is een economisch systeem dat is gebaseerd op investeringen van geld in de verwachting winst te maken. De productiemiddelen zijn meestal in privaat eigendom van een producent die daarbij veelal gebruikmaakt van loonarbeid om meerwaarde te creëren. Geld en kapitaalaccumulatie hebben hierbij de primaire rol overgenomen van de behoeftebevrediging in het economische proces.

Le capitalisme est un concept à la fois économique, sociologique et politique qui caractérise un système s'appuyant sur la propriété privée des moyens de production. Sa définition donne lieu à des variations dans l'espace et dans le temps, et en fonction des sensibilités politiques des personnes qui emploient le terme. Par ailleurs, l'un de ses fondements est l'accumulation du capital productif au travers de la réalisation du profit.
