carburizing

Carburizing, carburising (chiefly British English), or carburization is a heat treatment process in which iron or steel absorbs carbon liberated when the metal is heated in the presence of a carbon bearing material, such as charcoal or carbon monoxide, with the intent of making the metal harder. Depending on the amount of time and temperature, the affected area can vary in carbon content. Longer carburizing times and higher temperatures typically increase the depth of carbon diffusion. When the iron or steel is cooled rapidly by quenching, the higher carbon content on the outer surface becomes hard via the transformation from austenite to martensite, while the core remains soft and tough as a ferritic and/or pearlite microstructure.

Nawęglanie – zabieg cieplny polegający na dyfuzyjnym nasyceniu węglem warstwy powierzchniowej obrabianego materiału. Nawęglaniu poddaje się stale niskowęglowe (do 0,25% zawartości węgla), by zmodyfikować własności warstwy wierzchniej materiału w dalszych fazach obróbki np. zwiększyć jej twardość, a co za tym idzie odporność na ścieranie, przy równoczesnym pozostawieniu miękkiego, elastycznego rdzenia stali niskowęglowej. Zawartość węgla w strefie nawęglania wzrasta do 1–1,3%, a głębokość nawęglania wynosi najczęściej 0,5 do 2 mm.

Uppkolning, ökning av kolhalten i stål genom att dess ytskikt tar upp kol från en omgivande gas, pulver eller saltbad med högre kolaktivitet än stålet. Vid den efterföljande upphettningen till ca 850-950 °C diffunderar kolet in i stålets ytskikt. Uppkolning utnyttjas bl.a. för att öka ytkolhalten hos sätthärdade stål. Behandling ger efter härdningen en mycket hård och slitstark yta.
